Carol Grimes "Mother", Irregular Records CG59 2003

FolkWorld, Issue 31 1/2006

Carol Grimes, from origin blues singer, has recently issued her latest cd Mother. The cd contains twelve songs from composers like Sandy Denny, Nick Cave, Tom Waits and many others. Together with a fine group musicians Grimes turned Mother into an essential cd with elements of folk, Jazz and blues. It amazes me how she uses her great, bit raw voice to express all the corners of emotion into her music. In Two grey rooms and Scars she sounds fragile while in songs like USA from Shane MacGowen she sounds rough and untouchable. She gives a beautiful, pure blues interpretation of the Tom Waits song New coat of paint and her two self written songs Moira and blues for louis can easily measure with the songs written by the more legendary names mentioned before. A fantastic cd, pure, honest and beautiful.
